El VIH/SIDA está afectando de la manera más brutal a los niños y los jóvenes. Más de la mitad de las nuevas infecciones de VIH son en personas menores de 25 años. Millones están creciendo sin padres o viven en casas con algún miembro de la familia enfermo o muriendo, con poco o ningún acceso a la educación y a los servicios sanitarios, y sin una nutrición mínima. Para las niñas, esta situación es exacerbada por factores como el tráfico, la prostitución forzada, las violaciones, la circuncisión femenina y matrimonio temprano – todos ellos factores que aumentan exponencialmente el riesgo de infección de VIH de las niñas.
Se necesita una acción a gran escala para cerrar el abismo que existe entre lo que se ha hecho hasta ahora y lo que es imperativo para proteger a los niños y niñas afectados por el VIH/SIDA.

Lesson for Life on children and AIDS
32 million children have participated in Lessons for Life since 2004.
This year, we continue to promote the organisation of these events in
schools and non-formal education spaces to help children learn and
organise themselves around their response to the HIV and AIDS crisis.

The global launch of the Lesson for Life in Kenya
Hundreds of children from Gatoto Community School in Nairobi, Kenya,
gathered with their parents to take part in the Lesson for Life today
to launch the Lesson globally. The children were just some of the
140,000 taking part across the whole of the country.
At the school the children were joined by with representatives from
the Ministry of Education and local authorities, along with
representatives from each of the ten agencies that initiated the Lesson
for Life including the Chief Executive Officers of Plan and World
Vision.

Good news from Ghana
As part of the activities to celebrate Lesson for Life: World AIDS Day,
Plan Ghana in collaboration with World Vision International and Ghana
NGO Coalition on the Rights of the Child formed the Ghana Movement for
Children. The coalition scheduled the Lesson for Life for the 29th
November, 2004.
Some of the activities undertook by the children were processions on principal streets with placards with HIV/AIDS messages, film shows, drama, singing, and focus group discussions.
Some of the children drew pictures depicting their understanding of and

Lesson for Life defies difficult politics in Ukraine
Despite the difficult political situation the Lesson for Life was successfully held in Ukraine.
Preparation for the Lesson for Life was implemented by NGO 'Foundation
of Youth Culture and Education' (FYCE) which translated the materials
developed by the Global Movement for Children into Ukrainian and
distributed these among all interested governmental and
non-governmental institutions and mass media. The thematic web-page on
the issue and the youth e-forum in Ukrainian and Russian were prepared
and placed on the Independent Media Center web-site.
