Paraguay to host MMI-CLAC meeting on the UNVAC study
28 March 2011 - Convened by the Latin American and Caribbean Chapter of the GMC and the Instituto Interamericano del Niño (IIN), Paraguay will host a subregional meeting on the recommendations of the UNVAC study to discuss and spread their content as well as to set the basis for their effective implementation process at country level.
The main aims of the gathering are the following:
- to analyse the progress made in the implmementaion of the recommendations in the regions.
- to share good practices in overcoming violence
- to discuss in depth those aspects of the recommendations highlighted by the SRSG
- to put forward further recommendations to continue to keep the content of the UNVAC study up-to-date
- to listen to the views of children and adolescents on violence
- to analyse and spread the contents of issue-based reports by the CIDH that have addressed forms of violence and the rights of the child inthe Continent, a) security, b) juvenile criminal justice, c) physical and degrading punishment
Partially funded by the Global Movement for Children, the event is envisaged as an important stepping stone in the process of spreading the recommendations, maintaining them up to date and build a culture of peace where child rights are respected. Furthermore, the MMI-CLAC will consult those countries that are already creating the spaces for the follow-up, implementation and updating of the recommendations so as make sure every valuable experience is included.
One of the most important aspects of the meeting will be the participation of children and adolescents themselves in all stages of the event, having one child representative for every country through REDNNYAS or national consulting councils where REDNNYAS is not present.
Scheduled for April 28-29, the organisation has confirmed the participation of Marta Santos Pais, former Director of the UNICEF Innocenti Research Centre and UN Special Rapporteur Paulo Sergio Pinheiro.
