Commitment to Children Index enters new phase

Barcelona 19th October 2010 – Several months after the first informal meeting of experts, the GMC’s initiative Commitment to Children Index is advancing to define its key indicators and formulas. At the informal meeting in June the experts developed the conceptual framework of the index. They agreed on the meaning of a country committed to children and conceived four dimensions of the index: child development, participation, protection and survival.

The experts have been proposing sets of indicators that should be considered for each dimension of the Index. These proposals will be first discussed in a meeting in early December this year in Oxford, UK. Gareth Jones, former Head of the Strategic Information section in UNICEF HQ, Ferran Casas Senior Professor of Social Psychology in the Faculty of Education and Psychology at the University of Girona and Peter Adamson, former editor of the Progress of Nations and of UNICEF’s ‘The State of the World's Children’ report, together with GMC’s Executive Coordinator, Miquel de Paladella, will be reviewing the proposals and integrating them into a first draft Index. The outcome of their work will be submitted for further elaboration to the experts in a later meeting in Barcelona in early 2011.

A broad consultation process involving the Global Movement for Children's Convening Committee Members, international institutions, governments, child-focused organizations, and children has been envisaged in the second quarter of 2011.

The CCI is intended to become a GMC flagship project around which the child rights movement can rally, benefit from, provide input to and use as an advocacy and mobilization tool in every country, particularly in the framework of the efforts to meet the Millennium Development Goals and the follow up to the World Fit for Children agenda.
