Tots els nens tenen dret de començar la vida de la manera més sana possible. Tot i que s’han portat a terme millores impressionants en relació amb la salut dels nens, cada any moren gairebé 11 milions de nens menors de cinc anys. La majoria d’aquestes morts podrien evitar-se. Els nens moren de xarampió i tètanus, ambdós poden prevenir-se amb un senzill vaccí. També moren de pneumònia, malària i diarrea, sense tenir accés a les medicines que podrien salvar les seves vides.

Podem tenir cura dels nens fins i tot abans que neixin, cuidant de les seves mares, i és igualment important permetre que els nens tinguin cura de la seva pròpia salut. Serveis sanitaris adequats pels nens haurien d’estar disponibles, i els nens han d’aprendre sols a tenir cura d’ells.
